Building a dredge

I am going to build a small 1 1/2" dredge. I have a 4ft sluice with a roughly 2ft head box already. What I am wondering is would 6" pvc pipe work for the pontoons or should i use 8". I have a 3.5 Briggs running a keene 1 1/2 output pump (2" intake). And also how long do you think the pontoons should be?

Thanks

Bill

  • Bill: I have an old Keen 1 1/2" dredge that sets on a 20" truck tire innertube. You could figure out the cf. of air in the tube when it's inflated (appox. 10"dia.), and figure the weight of the tube (appox 10lbs.) Figure that against the weight of your pvc. Or you could go with 5ft.x8in. pvc. It's better to have to much flotation than not enough.

    • Thats what i was thinking. 5' of 8" would work and even allow me to adjust the angle of the box if i needed to.
