I purchased a book online its " The Gold Hunters Field Book" by: Jay Ellis Ransom. it's a perty good book with basic info. half of the book is on load mines in all 52 states and canida has som good info for New Mexico, the Ortiz mt. south of Santa Fe., Bernalillo co. Catron co. Colfax co. Dona Ana co. Grant co. Hidalgo co. Lincoln co. Otero co. Rio Arriba co. Sandoval co. San Miguel co. Santa Fe co. Sierra co. Socorro co. and Taos co. Load Mines are a great place to start, you know there is gold downstream.

  • Dennis...I purchased a "Smithsonian Handbooks: Rocks and Minerals" by Chris Pellant for identifying rocks and mineral specimens. I got it at Barnes and Noble for $20. Or it can be ordered online at www.dk.com. I has helped me a lot with excellent identification aids such as types of rocks, how they are formed, and each mineral chart breaks down a brief description, the general formation "need-to-know's", testing guidelines, specific gravity, cleavage, fracture and how the crystals are shaped. Hope it helps!
