Hello everyone! I'm new here so pardon me for just jumping in with a random question. But if anyone knows about stuff like this I'm guessing you guys do! Here goes, I've never done hands on panning but have researched the heck out if it and think I am ready for hands on. I realize hands on is a lot different then reading but I've got to start sometime. I've double checked my maps and it is BLM land that I have my target spot, my question is will I get in trouble for panning placer deposits without a claim? Because lets face it, there may not even be a spec of gold and I could be way off! How does that work if I'm just testing the area? Thanks in advance for the help! Kelly
Hi Kelly my name is Bill a.k.a"PickaxeBill" and I've done lots of panning. I've found a company called Geodek and they sell practice bags of easy panning practice dirt. Each bag always has gold and after you pan it you can always mix back up and pan it again. If ya have any questions my e-mail is pickaxebill@yahoo.com
Ted Nailed it with amount of serface disturbace, you should be able to Exsplore as long as you backfill your holes, find your ''Maridian, Township, and Range'' with these 3 things you can see if the land is claimed, I have a link on My GPS page that will help you find these 3 using longitude and latatude, after you have them use the ''LR2000'' to see if the land is claimed I understand all bridges are public and pan-able. Just what do you plan on digging a drywash creek, river bank ? So yes you can ''Exsplore''
You may be required to obtain a permit to use the BLM land, otherwise it should be smooth sailing. Ken is one of the wisest miners on the forum, so heed his advice.

If the area isn't already claimed, you are allowed to prospect using hand tools, as long as you don't do "significant disturbance".
