New To Prospecting

Hi all, yes you can call me newb lol, I now live in California beings that my husband is stationed here on FT Irwin training troops. I have been desperately searching the internet for locations to go and pan gold here in good ole' California. For the thrill of it mainly and to say that I did it. I see lots of blogs for other states but have not found much for the California area. I have already bought my pans and things but was curious to know where I can go here without treading on someones space. Somewhere that camping is allowed etc. Any and all leads would be wonderful. Thank you in advance for your help and happy hunting. Dana

  • Get yourself a morter mixing tub (from Home Depot or Lowe's) and a couple 5 gallon containers. Fill those containers with water and then you will be set to wet pan your dirt. Wet panning is much more efficient than dry panning. Now, if you find some gold by dry panning, then you had really better get some water up there, cause you are into some good stuff! Best of luck to you!
  • Hey all thank you so much for the insight, I was so excited to give it a try that I took my book on dry panning and my gear and headed out to some washes yesterday, didnt have any luck but wanted to practice and hope Im getting the just of it :).
  • hook up with me when i arrive in lancaster and i will take you to a nice spot not far from the base.dave
  • Hey kid, you are right in gold country. If you are living on base? or close by ,,its all gold country. Ft Irwin training center even expanded a while back and all that land is gold country. Its all dry , so have to bring your own water for panning. If they dont allow you to do it on base then , about anywhere just outside . Just check the washes till you find where its been dug before and you will know when you see it.
If that doesnt work out ,,most areas are claimed, so joining a club like GPAA or Vallyprospectors will give you a place with gold just south of the training center a ways.
    Good Luck !
  • Well Dana,
Just about anywhere on the Western slopes of the Sierra Nevada range.
Sorry, I don't know where Ft. Irwin is, or I could maybe give ya some areas not too far away from ya. If ya follow highway 49, you will be in some of the best areas for prospecting.
