  • yep be real careful handling mercury, a retort is the best way to see if its carring any gold in it. i get alot of mercury out of the rivers and it usually has gold in it
  • YEp liquid gold.....sounds like the old gent had some of that clear liquid that is brewed in the hills...

I am in the Vein mountain area, we have native raw mercury and mercury from the mining a hundred years ago.. collect it, learn about how to use it , before you even think of playing with the MERCURY. I find it everyday and just put it in a pickle jar. when I get enough, I will process it OUTSIDE, and with a retort that I made out of pipe parts and for less than 10 dollars.....best suggestion find someone who has worked mercury before for the experience
  • A retort is the safest way for the common prospector to remove mercury, keep all of your mercury coated gold in a plastic vial (will not break like glass) filled with water or glycerin (it will not evaporate like water) and cap off tightly, until you can safely remove the mercury, mercury will evaporate at "room temperature" and these fumes are the most dangerous, so you should have a respirator when working around mercury or at the very least be upwind of any mercury exposed to the air.

A word of caution when using a retort, be sure to have proper instructions when using a retort, it is basically a small "still" (please don't try to make moonshine with it! LOL) and can explode if not used correctly!!!

  • Yes, and there is LOTS of mercury where we were in NC. So you have to be very careful or you could wind up dead....... and it is common to have it on the gold as well. So the gold can be silver instead of gold colored. If you are working where mercury is, you need to go to some of the other sites and talk to someone who can explain how to work it safely. There are alot of methods for removal. Some safe, and some not so safe.
  • I agree, mercury turns a "golden silver" when loaded down with fine gold
  • Here in Kentucky, we have liquid gold. We call it bourbon! However, it doesn't sound like that is what he was talking about.

Maybe it was mercury ladden with fine gold. Once the mercury is evaporated off (don't do this in you home!), what is left is the gold.

    Beyond that, no other guesses.
  • well the man said he was panning when he got to the last little bit he seen what looked like a nugget in the bottom of hig pan when he went to pick it up it disolved and the fellow with him told him it was liquid gold and you had to pick it up with your snuffer bottle then dry it ous in your pan to a powder it sounds like a tall tale to me but i wasnt sure so i thought i would inquire about it on the site maybe someone else has herd of it and could let us know more about it thanks for your reply and maybe we will find out if it even exist
  • Tell us more of the story so we can anser you please???????????
