Insuring your dredge

With the price of gold where it is today, what are people doing to protect their investment in their dredges? I know that with mine I leave it on the river most of the dredge season and that has cause for concern. A five inch dredge has to weigh in the 200 lb plus range and hauling it in and out to the truck each time is a killer. I plan to lock the motors to the dredge and then chain the whole unit to a tree, but I'm afraid even this will not deter some of the thiefs we have out there and here is the question....can a dredge be covered by your homeowners insurance or can a special rider be gotten to cover it? What do other people do? coldwater gold

  • a good thief ... is a dead thief in my books... that is why i carry a gun when i am out prospecting....i have all my equipment engraved ..and not just 1 spot but 2 or 3 spots ... i ever catch some one trying to steal mine or some one i know equipment ... i will shoot their a** NO QUESTIONS ASKED!!!!..... lol that way they will never steal from any one AGAIN!!!!!
  • There was a guy in Oregon I believe, that recently has some of his equipment stolen, but it was on private property, not out on the river, and his homeowners insurance covered his lost, but out on a river you will have to outwit the thieves, I have never heard of a policy that would cover in that scenario.

You may be able to get some kind of outfitter's insurance to cover a lost?

  • Hi ROB. Their are two main things you can do!!! motion sencer cameras work good night and day!!! Set in the right place no one knows... Mite not stop them but you will know who they are...From the pictures you sent me a high leed would work good were you are at...Easy in easy out..If you are going to chain it, make sure all your chain is in pipe were cutters can not get to them, lock to. not really hard to make up if you think about it.. for the motors, pipe caps for the pump/motor...large enought for the pipe to run through...look at your dredge youwill see how to do it... If not send me an email with your ph# I can tell you on there..we are headed out thurs to start moving rock pro, come out tues or wed,

  • It seems that several machines come up stolen every year, and yep with the price of gold and the high cost of eqipment, there is always someone out there looking to make a deal and dont ask questions as to why someone is offerig the equipment they are. A friend lost his custom built dredge last year while driving to town and back..... whoever took it was watching and took the opportunity, so we are keeping our ears open and eyes to the differnt lists and so forth for offerings of a completely customized drdge, the one thing he had been doing was putting a GPS tracker on it at night, but just running to town runs the battery and he wanted to have it fully charged for the night..... since he was just gonna be gone a little while, he left it and it was gone, ropes cut, and it was outta there..... no insurance, shoot this is Idaho not California.....lol ok we have thieves here too.

At our outting folks tend to lose small equipment for some reason too, other folks think they need it more than the owner and just pick it up if left unattended, and these are usually people we think we know and trust..... so everything i have is engraved where it can be, and then marked with a permanent type marker [double the effort but making it harder to disguise too] But it never ceases to amze me that folks with just a little bit of effort can make enough gold color show up in a pan to buy another one, or classifiers and sluices and with that make enough to buy a bigger piece of equipment, but shoot that is to much like work eh? and why work when you can make others work for you and get their stuff for free..... why do you think i also pack a firearm when prospecting and mining, claim jumpers don't just work your claim..... and criminals come from ALL walks of life...... I have little use for a thief and pert near all of them aught to dangle from a rope, only a few dont need to make it that far.
