6' Power Sluice by RDH

I'm going to Colorado in a few weeks and wanted to try my hand at prospecting. The place I'm going has a creek running through it and the owner said that in the past there has been gold panned out of the creek. About 7 miles of the creek runs through his property. I am thinking of getting a 6" power sluice from RDH (http://stores.rdh-prospecting.com/-strse-59/6%22-Power-Sluice-Setup/Detail.bok). Since I basically have no idea what I'm doing I could sure use some advice. Any suggestions.

Thanks,

Robbie

  • Thanks for all the input. I ended up getting a 10" power sluice (http://stores.rdh-prospecting.com/-strse-27/10%22-Power-Sluice-Setu...) along with a 1/4 classerfier. Hopefully that will get me started. When I get back maybe I'll have some pictures showing my results. I'll be back on the 6th of June so I'll post after that.

  • hey robbie, I have an rdh sluice that also has the combo header box. the guys at rdh built me some better riffles for running the nozzle. I have to admit that I like this setup. you will find alot of different boxes out there

I really depends upon the places you are going and the material. CLASSIFY!

The folks at rdh are a good group to talk to. they will make about anything that pertains to there sluices.

Some folks (Including myself have several "boxes" for different applications, you will probably gather as time goes by.

  • HurtHawk and some of the other guys on here use the Junior at the bottom of the page for crevicing and general use. I shovel a lot of gravel bars so I use the next one up due to much more material. I put bars on mine but all you need is a short board to span it so you can weight it down with a rock. then you dont have to stack rock to pinch the edges in place. $32 and it lands at your door.

  • The general rule is you only buy equipment on money from metal you cash in except startup. Not much choice on the pan or screen but the sluice can be built from wood. There is a thread here about where to look. if you have two days spend the first sampling so you know where to dig and the second digging and running material. Try to process close to your digging holes so they are easy to fill in with the leftovers. Buckets of dirt are very heavy. you have to treat them like eggs as well or the bottoms split. Even good buckets will split if you set them down on rocks that arent flat ground. The RDH is a nice little unit but at the $200 price point there are several to choose from.  When you cash in some gold then shop if you want to keep digging.

  • I'v looked at larger sluices but I'v got a space restriction. I'm flying from Houston to Durango and being picked up. All my stuff is coming up in a pickup with 3 other people and all their stuff so size is critical. If I find out it's fundand I find some gold, then I'll look at some more stuff. This is all I need; another hobby!

  • Yep, Casluicebox mini sluice, a finish pan (10 inch) and a 1/8" classifier screen and buckets/shovel.
