Puzzled about Silver??

Went to quartzville for 2 days a couple weeks ago.  Found color right off the bat but also found a lot of a silver material that was heavy too.  Can this be gold treated with mercury or is it something different??  Anyone out there with experience in this area with an idea of what we were finding...PLEASE add a comment.

  • I'm told if you find silver it would be dark color (not silver bright) because of tarnish.  Sounds right?

  • Was that Quartville Creek near Sweethome Oregon ?  If it was yes many historic mines in the area and mercury coated gold is not unusual you may even find it in such levels as to have collected fine gold in to a pellet that will breakup ! if you find a big enough piece to scrap

  • There is silver in the area from what I have read. I've never found any in my pan. I guess the easiest way to tell is to put it in a retort and fire it up. If the gold comes out clean it's mercury. May not be the safest way.
