Good words Gail, I started out with a Garretts, I forget the model. It worked good right outta the box for an inexperienced detector. I went to an old school playground and found a gold ring (14k) within minutes and a whole lot of wheatie pennies after that! I have a brother who totally believes in them and is a semi-famous battlefield reconstructor in Georgia. Found so much stuff!
If you are hunting parks for coins, then yes, the Garrett Ace 250 is a GREAT starter machine. For gold nuggets - not so much. A starter gold machine is around $650 new. There are a couple of choices for the serious hobbiest: Tesoro Lobo SuperTRAQ; Fisher GoldBug II; Whites GMT. Good Luck! - Terry
I have a White's MXT, which has been a great machine! I am considering buying and Ace 250 as a backup machine and for stowing in my checked baggage when travelling to potential detecting locations (beach areas, etc). I have travelled with the MXT a couple of times, but always fear it getting smashed up or something. The Ace 250 would be less of a loss, but still a good all around machine to use.
The type of machine you get really depends on what you want to use it for - coin shooting, nugget hunting, etc. Different machines will do different things for you.
Hi, excellent choice for 1st one if your searching for coins, relics, rings etc. a very uncomplicated, easy & comfortable machine & believe me thats very important . these machines have really clear tones helping you to identify different targets . In my opinion its a gud buy . Good luck & happy hunting
