Most of you know by now that I went prospecting to Ghana... primarily to help a village get set up for small scale mining. Even after 4 days it's still kind of strange to think about the fact that I'm on a different continent. Below are a couple pics to get started.
I haven't got to do but about an hour of electronic(or any other) prospecting, but that should change tomorrow and in the coming days. It was an adventure just getting here and I am hoping this will become a productive endeavor. If not, then it least it was an experience. As you can see from one of the pictures, the forest(bush) is not detector friendly. Vines and stuff growing out of the ground interfere with any kind of detector swing that is more than a few inches side to side. I did manage to find a coin that was worth about 10 cents.
There are plenty of galamsey(illegal miner) diggings around that look like prime detecting spots... they have been de-vegetated due to the mining activity and the galamsey use a crude type of wooden highbanker that I know loses lots of gold. The problem is, these spots are just off of the chief's land. His land is of a similar type to the gold bearing land around him, but will definitely take some digging to get through the overburden. They are not put off by this and have arranged for an excavator to be brought out on Friday. (These Ashanti chiefs know how to get things done.) Most of them wear official dress like you see in the picture. It has no pockets so they carry their cell phone around in their hand.
I'll post updates as things start evolving and hopefully have some good gold pictures to show you all.
