Lead: Worth its weight in, well, Lead.

No matter where you prospect or treasure hunt, and no matter the methods, dredge, high-banker, sluice, dry washer or metal detecting, we all have come across lead shot, lead projectiles, lead slugs, etc. Now I don't know what people do with them during clean outs, but I think maybe it would be a good idea to save and “stock pile” them for lead will surely go up soon as it about a buck a pound right now (12/23/2013).

What most people do not know is that there is only ONE, count 'em, ONE refineries in the United States that has the ability to take raw lead ore (Galena) and refine it to pure lead. This ONE company will cease to exist on December 31 of 2013 due to yeah, the EPA. Sure there are many “recyclers”, but when everything is used up, it has to be IMPORTED at a high cost, and what's more, any mining concern who mines lead ores will have to either ship it out of the country via rail or cargo ships at an even higher cost. In fact, I would bet that some of those lead mines will just shut down unless they can make it on their side metals, the little bit of gold and silver they get, but they will probably just stop mining altogether.

I can see the cost of a standard car battery that runs $75 now, be up to $150 or more in a year or two. If lead goes the way of Copper, I can see many a vehicle not starting in the morning when you need to go to work, due to thieves grabbing car batteries to recycle them.

Now the only things I can think of off hand for lead is lead/acid batteries, bullets, fishing sinkers, divers weights, etc.. I'm sure there's more applications that I am missing.

Bottom line, what would a 5 gallon pail of lead for recycling weigh out at and then go to 2 and 3 bucks a pound.

While your at it, keep the brass shells and cartridges. They all add up!

  • Yep, I agree.  The left works for the bansters and the right works for the banksters.  Until we get rid of the FedRes and print interest free money, it will NEVER get better, only worse, as that is who it is planned out to be.  We should be folowing in Icelands footsteps and throw the bankers in jail, cancel the fraudulent debt and start over. For me, I just keep accumulating mining things so if and when it all comes to a head, at least I will be prepared to earn a meager living off fine gold, where gold and silver will be the only means of trade.    I keep a pretty sharp eye on things on a daily basis and it's not looking good.  4 things are systematically destroying what is left of the US.  Federal policies, NSA, Monsanto and the fiat monetary system.  I could write a book, but thousands have written them before me!   And the public just says "Oh look, a cute squirrel!"  Not imagining that will be them foraging for food in a bread line.  The dollar is done. Long live the gold!

  • More American workers lose their jobs. We don't have enough jobs for American workers now and continue to find ways to cut jobs from our economy.  At some point this has to be reversed. Really sad!
