Well Mike its been soaking in white vinigar about 36 hours now but hasn't made a dent in the darkpatina so I guess I move up the scale of caustics Has any one tried Murratic acid ?
I had some brown clean up with white vinegar and some didnt in the same shot glass. If its iron buildup "Iron out" may work. Or the torch. The torch makes all gold shine when your done lol

try some salt w/your vinegar and shake the heck outta it..works great on coins..heard it works on gold too

You could try nitric acid- it'll eat up just about anything except gold. Ted

You could try CLR... Muriatic is 32% Hydrochloic
