Well, not sure if this a patent or unpanteted claim, but since you took it over, I will assume it is unpatented .
Back in the day, a lot of people would file a claim on these properties, and just move in . If there was a structure on the claim, it became home . Not legal, but it happens . Recently the NFS has been cracking down, on these maybe not so legal residents .. There have been many structures burned, and people displaced .. I would think that this place was one of the evictions, but I don't know for sure . If that structure is on NFS land, or BLM land,I wouldn't put too much effort or $$ into restoring it .. It may just go up in smoke .

The claim was abandoned, no eviction.
I knew the previous claimants, just a bunch of partiers.
They inhearited the claim from their G-pa.
There were plans in the works to get a patent until '94 when that was done away with by gov't.
Ol' G-pa would roll in his grave to know that they lost it.
He located it back in the '30's.
The FS actually saved it from a forest fire a few years back, but they did lose the outhouse.
I've been following all the rules and regs in regards to the whole issue.
If you dig into the rules and regs you'll find there are still provisions for structures and limited occupancy.

We had just takenover the claim. All that crap came from inside the cabin. There was a totally destroyed hide-a-bed out back next to the campfire pit.
I hauled off two pickup loads.
