That's a good idea, I do that with the turkey baster, That slide hammer weighs 6 Lbs.. That would work with a longer rope, those boulders in there bury up things quick when your seeing good Gold!
Instead of attaching a float to the strong rope, why not attach the other end to your weight belt. Then when you need it, a quick pull and it is in hand instead of having to stop and look for the float.
The thing was black when I got it! I lost the first one, (covered with tailings) when your working bedrock your ususlly pretty deep!! The red thing on the left is a float that will be attached by a strong light weight 6' nylon rope which will be always be floating above all the tailings and wreckage..

that's funny I did the same thing to my mining tools.
