  • Well yeah we know its got iron mixed in. but there is another metal there. I would hate to think it was nickel and you powdered a good rock that needed to be sliced. Even some of the rocks i get here and the one full of gold wires in my pic are magnetic. I think my material is hematite. But when people say to do a scratch test, they dont realize the exteriors of very old meteorites also break down to hematite and leave dark streaks.  A specific gravity test really doesnt help because they are the same as most earth rocks except for having a greater portion of nickel. A greater portion of iron can skew that test. When the earth was molten all the nickel went down into its iron core. That is why the nickel test is 97% positive. Space rocks still have their nickel at greater than 6%.
