  I thought it was V-matting. Just was unsure. So now the trick question...... deep v or shallow v?  Thank you Keith!!!

  V-matting in the top of sluices is becoming more frequent.  Why have slick plate there?  It can't catch any gold.  You might as well have something there that will.  The top foot of my sluice is V-matting and it catches at least 50% of the gold, and probably would be higher except if I didn't have punch plate over the V-matting.
