Probably just compacting from time. There are other mine shafts in the area that are at least 50 + feet deep. Those scare me. This one is only about 10 ft. I could climb out no problem.
That thing is Scary How deep is it (the water) might want to think about tying a rope to that tree and leave it in the hole. Do you think the Water table is Eating up th soil or just compacting from time ?
It was an old mine shaft. It was filled in a long time ago, but the hole has become a sink hole and is opening back up. Works great for a water recycling hole though.

I have been told that around here, the miners were after copper. But who knows.

What were they Mining ? We Have one behind the house here thats 15' around and about 200' Deep with I think 2 Shelfs.
