your very correct the same thing happened here, several large nuggets have been found 20-30 yards from the creek sides just lying on the ground on cobbles, assumed to have been thrown over the back of prospectors cleaning their gold!
If I recall correctly, gold panners along the the Bill Williams river in Arizona had found platinum nuggets back in the day. They didn't know what it was, and assumed it was worthless lead, so tossed it out of their pans. Back in tehe 1600's and 17oo's, the average Joe on the cobblestone streets never saw gold in it's raw form.. nuggets. So I would guess that Platinum would have been mistaken (albeit an expensive lesson), for lead most commonly.
