BUTTE COUNTY, Calif. -A gold nugget found in the foothills of Butte County is the largest ever in California to be in private hands, according to the auction house that currently holds it.The nugget, which weighs in at 75 troy ounces or in the ballpark of 5.2 standard pounds, was discovered by a man on public land, but an exact location is not being revealed.The lucky prospector who made the discovery is also withholding his identity and the chunk of gold has been moved to an auction firm, Kagin's in the Bay Area, for safe keeping.David McCarthy, senior numismatist with Kagin's, said the nugget should fetch in the $400,000 range and will likely be sold to a private buyer in the next three months.McCarthy said Kagin's plans to show the nugget at the upcoming San Francisco Fall Antique Show.
