  Yes,Keith if I was digging deep.But that's what experimenting with it last summer showed me how to use it,scratching the surface loosens the clay and gravels,the hose is 9" from the teeth so there's plenty of room.

  Even in loose gravel, won't digging with the bucket shear off the hose coming out the side?

  This is used where the material is all about pea gravel sized.Its in a trough close to any shore line in the ocean,ancient and recent.

  That's a 6" nipple on the side, going to sluice box by way of 6" hose
