  • i have used this stuff called "dexpan" for busting up large rock. you might want to look into it.

  • OK so I'm hoping this post will bring this back to the top of the page for all to see for those of u that don't know this is a boulder I found in a gully or pit behind my home...there is a boulder as big as a vw beetle between 2 other places I'm curious about the ground under neath wondering if I should try to dig a hole and see if there might be a layer of river cobbles with possible gold. Looking for insight seeing this rock and knowing there are other huge rocks around would you dig in the ground???
  • William great point, I really like this way. You can set the fire then continue to prospect in the same area so you don't leave the fire going without supervision. It takes a while but is very effective in making boulders more manageable.

  • Corey here is another way you can go using fire to heat up the rock, it will take a couple hours and very cheap. Here is a video on YouTube that I personally like https://youtu.be/0wqxWC4OAK0 just remember where those safety glasses, this method goes back to the Stone Age. And make sure you check your local laws I know here in Virginia we are in a burn ban

  • I'm with you corey, It's fun to see what's inside. nothing like hands on for experience. I for one well veer off the beaten path on a hunch or out of curiosity. Hey ya never know when you may discover that one thing that everyone else missed. ;)

  • the whole reason I want to break it up is to see whats in it...if it has gold then Awesome...if not...oh well at least I got a hell of a workout bustin it open.

  • I agree with Spur if you are specifically looking for gold and not in it for the fun of breaking it up. I definitely would make sure you know what's in it by taking a small sample.

  • Quartz is an abundt mineral. I wouldn't waist much time unless there is Rust staining or visible Gold through a Loop you can Chip it and have it Assayed. Where is it from ? Looks like Blk mica, Fildspar and rocks of Quartz like its a type of Conglomerit
  • See if someone on here has a Sierra Blaster, you might be able to rent it from them or something. Other option a face shield and a BASH (Big A** Sledge Hammer) then go to town, spread it out over a couple weekends. You could also run wedges into it See short video > https://youtu.be/qzkeaKk2Kug

  • Saw Dust use - I just heard back in the old-timers day that saloons would cover their floors with saw dust. This would keep old-timers from finding their gold that they spilled. Saloon owners would sweep up and collect the gold. This was brilliant!
