gate valve or what is left of one. In the hole in the top of the gate valve there was a threaded rod that had a handle that you turned to raise and lower a gate that fit in the housing. the pipe came in pre rolled and punched for the rivits and was put together by a black smith on the mine sight.
It is called a monitor which was used for hydraulic mining. Go to the group "Old Mining Pictures" and look thru all the pics and you will see a monitor being used!
