Do you have any other pictures of this, say, with the light source over head? One corner looks broken/worn. Have you tried a streak test?

Red in color, i'd lean more towards Cinnabar. Heres info on it: http://webmineral.com/data/Cinnabar.shtml
Seeing the structure of that form would help the most. Streak test on Galena would be gray, Cinnabar would be bright red.
These are Dark Red and Very Heavy, kind of Metalic Found in a soft heavy Ore
