  • Lisa, Clay can be difficult, if not impossible to deal with by itself. It is notorious for having the ability to pick up gold as it rolls down a sluice and right out the back into the river because gold will stick to it. Heard a story about a dredge running for three months straight in Alaska without doing a cleanup. Then it it hit a patch of clay that totally cleaned out the sluice box in like one day. Supposedly they lost three months of work and a huge amount of gold. I believe the best way to work with clay is to mix it with small rocks in a cement mixer before processing it. This breaks up the clay so the gold won't stick to it. I would also say the clay from the creek bed is more likely to be associated with gold than the red clay. I would be very surprised if the red clay contained any gold. You can pan the clay but you have to break up all the clay lumps by hand to be sure it's not stealing your gold.

  • Lisa, I don't know if you're familiar with the Gold Majic Spiral Wheel but that is the one piece of equipment that I couldn't live without. I have tried all kinds of stuff, but so far that seems to be the one piece that I use over and over again. Very easy to setup, use and break down. Works well and can go through a 5 gallon bucket of unclassified material in about 30 minutes. They use them out at the Cotton Patch Gold Mine which is another good place to check out. Expensive, but they have the highest quality dirt around and the owner Jeff is a Gold mining encyclopedia. I'm actually in Fort Mill, SC which is just south of Charlotte. Fort Mill Photography is the name of my company. We do about 50-75 weddings a year amongst other stuff. Wouldn't mind taking a break from photography to hunt for gold myself but the timing isn't quite right just yet. Maybe in another couple of years. Take Care.

  • Lisa, The name of the group is the Matthews, NC GPAA Chapter. They are about as nice a group of people as you're likely to come across. They are listed under groups on this website and this is their website. {http://gpaamatthews.com/Home_Page.html}I have been hanging out with this bunch for years and they are passionate about their gold prospecting. They are also the most active group in the area with at least one outing planned every month. Sometimes more. Glen and Phyllis are founding members and own about 10 acres in Concord. They have most meetings and some outings right there at their place. I usually get up there a couple times a year so hollar at me if you see me there sometime this year. Or let me know if you want to go check out some creeks sometime. I'm usually available on Mondays as my wife and I are photographers and work most weekends. Good people up there. Give them a call.

  • Lisa,

There is a very active group not far from you in Concord. Send me a message and I'll get you more info if interested. Good luck in your search for gold.
