Anyone done any panning in the Midland NC area of cabarrus county. Just starting out and was wondering if anyone has been successful panning the Rocky river or any of the many small streams in the area.

Yep... sure have. Do you have access to any land? Be careful about entering land in that area without permission. They are watching for trespassers. I'm from Cabarrus County and mother and brother live in Midland. I see you stated the river is beside your home? I own several dredges if you would like to dredge one day. Just give me a shout. Most of my father's side of family are from Locust. Kin to about all in that area. My family goes back to 1740's from that area.
Rocky River - this would be my first choice of prospecting areas.
Rocky river that flows through Stanly, Cabarrus, and Union counties and all of it's tributaries contain some amount of gold in stream gravel. In many cases the gold is in clay with stream gravel in it. Some streams are mostly bedrock and are easy pickings. Best places on the river are in lower Cabarrus through Stanly county. Several 1 ounce nuggets have been found throughtout the area. I have heard stories of bigger but not from a reliable source.
Go for it. Remember to get permission before going on private property. Some neighbors shoot first, and nothing comes second!
