  • What creek are you on Bill I am on rappet creek.
  • You got that much gold out of 5 buckets? Nice- I'd say you got a very good deal on your claim. Looks like about 1/4 oz. That would make appox. 2oz. per cy. Even figuring that you concentrated it, that's still extremely rich.   Ted
  • I'm pretty much a greenhorn myself.  Bought my Black Hills clain on eBay this summer and I'm very pleased with it.
  • I am the consummate greenhorn gold miner, until a year ago I knew nothing but have made a little progress over the last year!

I am retired (72) and just do it to learn about gold mining and to keep fit and mobile.

I don't have a claim and just fossic in the creeks close to home, about a 50 mile radius.

We live on the cusp of the Otago gold fields in South Island New Zealand.

The gold around this part is very very fine mainly and quite challenging, well for me anyway! lol.

We are just about to leave to visit another city for a few days so may not reply until we get back.

    Cheers, John.

  • John... I just shoveled material into my classifer on my pan.... sat on a plactic milk crate right in the stream and washed/agitated/classified right in the stream to get bigger stones out... put the material in a bucket and shoveled some more.  LOL  There were other areas that weren't rocky... its a 40 acre claim with about 1/4 mile of stream.  I only worked a very small area.... next year I'll do more.  I have a lot to learn but even so I had a great time... a grand adventure.  The Black Hills are awesome.  Where are you located John?  I'm in Buffalo, NY... my claim is 1,400 miles away.
  • That's a really rocky stream, you must have had to move a lot of big rocks to get down to the sediment and be able to dig!

What did you use to lift the wash and the gold up from the stream bed and put it in your classifier/ bucket?

Really nice gold though, well worth the hard work!

Thank's for sharing, it is appreciated. Cheers, John.

  • John... I was in the stream about 20 hours... testing and then classifying material with a #4 classifier.  I brought 10 buckets home and I've panned out 5 so far.2960225091?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024
