hey thanks that could be it....never crossed my mind....but there miles up a crk they had to have been packed in by horse are mule...nothing but little trail.....
My guess is they might be core sampling bits used on a small rotary drilling unit or drilling bits used to drill holes prior to filling them with blasting agent.
