Found an area last Sunday and went back up Wednesday. First pan (actually less than half a pan) got me pretty excited:

Finished that crevice thinking if that much was in the middle, how much would be on the bottom?! Well I'm sad to say not much, some, but not enough to warrant another picture.

Moved on to three small cracks in bedrock. Worked about an hour trying to get everything out but the tools I have are geared more towards larger crevices:

Yea, I've gotten some new smaller tools already! This again was from less than half a pan (that's a 10" pan pictured). Small cracks/small gold but at least it's gold lol.

Finally last Sunday my son and I worked a crevice and decided to put it all into a 5 gallon bucket to give us something to do after work during the week. The bucket was 2/3rds full and we panned it Wednesday after we got home:

That's half of the gold, my son's pan had that much or a little more. Now for the good news......there is more dirt in the that crevice. Guess where I'll be tomorrow!!

and HOW ABOUT LAST NIGHT!! Winnar even!

holy heck that was cool.. Radio show FTW.

So, about me.

TOTAL NEWB at this whole prospecting thing.. HUGE fan of the Gold Rush show and I would totally quit my job to go work with Schnabel. well, close.

So I saw on Parkers face book page where he was hocking "paydirt" for goldrush.

I thought ya know.. if people find out Im buying dirt online they're gonna think Im crazy but.. It's Christmas.. Im in.. and I bought myself a bag of 2lbs of dirt with hopes of finding gold.

THAT was the most relaxing thing I've done in quite awhile. and so it began. The research.. who knew so many people sold dirt online. ( and Ive been in alot of places on the internet :) ) with a little research it didnt take long to find Doc, and GoldHog. Reviews showed he was tops in the biz and his dirt was good. I bought into it :)

HOOKED.

so after becoming a member of his site, I saw the radio show and listened in. Then saw this place listed as THE place to be..

the rest is history :) here I am.

I have a pan. a black pan I got from my Bro in Law while we were in Colorado back in 13' - Great Vacation in Idaho Springs.

Thats the pan I used for my dirt, and the pan I plan to take back with me when I go back to Colorado and back to Idaho Springs.. THIS TIME with a lil more knowledge on what in sam heck I should be doing!

I do own a MD but dont get it dirty too much. the only really awesome find was that same vacation up in one of the abandoned mines ( the old 94 up by yankee hill? ) and came back with a very cool stove flapper.

Id guess early 1900's from the looks of it..

annnnnyway - thats me, thats my story in a plastic pan :)

REALLY appreciate the warm welcome last night and still thrilled that I actually WON! wowzer thats cool!.

Thanks all!

I have a newbie question concerning claims and my research on the Google machine has not provided me with a definite answer. My question:

If some has a lode claim does that prohibit prospecting for placer gold by anyone not on the lode claim?

This situation is there is a creek that looks like it'll be a nice shady area to explore once it warms up out here in a month or so. There are 2 lode claims in the section but neither appear to be anywhere near the creek if I'm reading the BLM papers correctly. I don't expect any issues but in case there are I want to make sure I'm not "claim jumping" someone else territory.

Sorry its taken me so long to get back here, been on a fairly large project that's taken a lot of my attention this past winter.

A little about me: I'm 44, rather new to mining but am a quick study. Living in Las Vegas, NV for about 12 years now working as a Fire/Life Safety Technician. Originally from SW Florida and love being in the water so dredging is of particular interest to me but living in the desert, its kinda hard to find spots to go. Fair to say I've watched all of Jeff Williams and Allan Mash's Youtube videos....and just about every other video about mining i could find. Am a GPAA member, will be getting an AMRA membership too mostly for the claim access but also for the support.

Anyways, always looking for things to do and places to go so if you find yourself around Vegas and doing some mining, id be happy to help.

Seasoning finishing panshttps://www.goldprospectorsspace.com/forum/topics/seasoning-finishing-pans2018-03-23T12:40:33.000Z2018-03-23T12:40:33.000ZMerle Mitchellhttps://www.goldprospectorsspace.com/members/MerleMitchell

I posted this once before but cannot find it anywhere (including my own activity page! I have been finding a bit of fine stuff which is great. Now I know a picture is worth a thousand words, but this stuff is so small my camera won't capture it. Some of this stuff is so fine that I am having a hard time distinguishing the peices of gold from other "stuff". Looking at some pieces they look a lot like small pieces of mica. When I magnify a piece however some are clearly gold some not so. A piece will look like gold but on an edge might have some black to brown color. With the point of a razor if I try to drag it on the bottom of my pan it leaves a streak then kinda breaks onto smaller pieces. I was hoping someone could give me some pointers on how to best tell if it's gold and things to look for.

Thanks!https://www.goldprospectorsspace.com/forum/topics/thanks-42016-04-07T21:48:30.000Z2016-04-07T21:48:30.000ZJim Skiffhttps://www.goldprospectorsspace.com/members/JimSkiff

Thanks for the warm welcome from everyone.
No really spring up here in Maine yet,it will be a while before the rivers settle down.

I have hunted for gold in California where an old miner taught me the ropes about 30 years ago.

I did educational seminars for kids based on panning and eventually got into teaching Science because of it.

Most of the gold I find is in antiques, including gold jewelry but I am really excited about taking my kids out to the streams over April vacation and "wetting a pan" again.

I am in the process of getting classifying screens. What do the numbers mean ? I am looking into classifying Small stuff. Possibly 50, 100, 150 mesh screens.? Numbers I see are marked 1/4, 1/8, even 1/50. Have also seen decimal numbers such as .50, .25 etc which I assume are quarter, half etc.... some instances show a negative in front of a number ( -50, -100 ) Have also heard them refered to as # 8, # 10 etc...So, I realize it all relative somehow but, what do I look for in the numbers. is a -50 the same as a 1/50 ? Any help to understand is greatly appreciated. New to this site and have learned some things. Thank you for your time

I've hit a couple of creeks and rivers and have a specific question that I hope I can frame properly so I don't sound too stupid.
I found a creek that has no feeder creeks at all and I've been find a little flour gold in it where it has been concentrated by the flow and floods etc.
My question is this.... Is there a source I should be looking for in a creek that has gold in it deposited from a glacier?
I know that the glacier, well the material brought down thousands of years ago, is the source, but my question is, has anyone found that there is a certain land mass, whether it be a hill that the creek cuts through or a chunk of dirt somewhere, that is the source of the gold that is found?
I know it all depends on what happened long ago but I'm wondering if anyone has prospected glacier placer creeks and sampled thoroughly up and down the thing and was able to pinpoint and say, "Aha! This hill/chunk of land where the creek cuts thru is where all this flour gold is coming from!"
Also has anyone in glaciated gold bearing streams ever found somewhat unpulverized gold deposits that weathered over time and fed the creeks with gold like in gold bearing places out west.
I know a simple answer is "You gotta sample and find out what's out there" but I'm wondering if anyone has run into that sort of scenario in glacier gold areas.
Sorry if my question isn't clear and thanks for reading this wall of text and any answers you all got.
Proper sluice boxhttps://www.goldprospectorsspace.com/forum/topics/proper-sluice-box-12017-09-25T19:59:21.000Z2017-09-25T19:59:21.000ZRoland Siirtolahttps://www.goldprospectorsspace.com/members/RolandSiirtola
What brand and type of sluice box is recommended for finding ultra small gold along a stream. Any gold left is microscopic but under a magnifyglass I can see hundreds and hundreds of specs. I don't know the sizes but -200 to -500 ( let's just say... Too small to see without magnifyglass). The problem.....there is no more black sand and the material is probably 60-70% garnets (of all sizes) which are heavier than the gold so impossible to pan. Thinking the gold would Washout before the garnets in the Miller table. So I'm still learning to clean the stuff and separate and all that but getting the stuff into my vial is a real pain.
I'm using tweasers and the suck and drop snuffer bottle method but there has to be a better way.
