Thanks for the comments ! This was part of a clay shelf deposited by the glaciers. The quality of this clay was so good it was used in the pottery industry for years. There were 2 major glaciers that stopped growing and started receding. These 2 layers are, from what I've been told, are about 6 ft. apart and if there was any gold it could not penetrate these layers of clay. So............. if you find this layer when your in a creek and gold has been found in that creek there's a good chance you'll have enough clay to make an ashtray. You may find gold there too !
