Highbanker Pump Question

I bought a highbanker. It is on the way. I can't decide on what pump to buy. The highbanker is a 10" wide  with a 18'x18" hopper. I have read where a lot of people are using the Harbor Freight clear water pumps with some success. I don't know how big of a pump (GPH) I should go with. Any suggestions? Also, This is something I will get to use just a few times a year, not an every weekend set up if that helps.

  • I also use the Honda 2.5 HP Keene dredge pump. It is expensive, but it cranks first pull, and weight is next to nothing.
  • hello all. just want to mention one thing here.. a 2 inch trash/clear water pump works great in a high banker. for those

of you with a highbanker / dredge combo who are looking for a pump. a pump that puts out 50-70 psi works the best

don't worry about gpm pressure is what works here.. the dredge works off of water pressure to create the suction needed  a high banker works off of water volume gpm. so keep that in mind when looking for a pump.

  • i use the standard keene engine that the high banker sells with...its the engine smallest they make..for the 2 inch...problem with the harbor freight engines there not designed to run  8 hours a day...they will burn out on you,,,,,

    • Sorry but I will have to disagree with you on that. 3 of us ran our harbor freight pumps more than 8 hours a day for about 4 days straight and no issues. If we was running every day then maybe I could see but 3 years now knock on wood our pumps have been fine. We run 3 or 4 days at a time a couple times every month if weather is nice. Change the oil and use stable in the engines and so far we have had good luck. For the price we pay it's a great deal. Each is your own everyone has that special thing they use. Just my thoughts. Keene does make good pumps also.

      • My choice is the Honda wx-15, nice and light and reliable as can be ( mine is now 10 years old), down side is the cost  but will provide more than enough for a 10" high banker unless you are running Gold Hog matts then I would not be sure about water volume.

  • Before you buy anything from HF go online and look for coupons. There is a 20% off any 1 item coupon right now thats good till 2/5. Could have saved you 40 bucks to put towards dinner with the wife :)

  • I bought one today. I went to Harbor Freight just to look around. They had the 6.5 hp 2in on sale for $199. I was the clear water pump which I was worried about. I have watched videos of guys using them with good screens. When I asked about the pump they offered me the pump, a 2 year warranty all for $209. I asked what the warranty covered and they said I could destroy it for 2 years and get it replaced. I just felt like I couldn't pass up that deal. If it doesn't work all I am out is $200 and I have a water pump for around the house.

    • Always look for the 20 to 25% off coupons when making a big purchase at HF.

That pump is a great one for a banker.. will only need to run the pump at a quiet 1 tick above idle... if you decide to convert it to a dredge and run a 2 1/2 inch nozzle it will still work for you. You can get parts for those pumps at most online go-cart and minibike dealers dirt cheap... 18$ for an OEM replacement carburetor ... cant even get a Honda rebuild kit for that little.

  • Thanks guys for all of your answers.
