GPS Mapping

I find it difficult to look at the GPAA book and find claims that are not marked very well.

I would like to know if anyone knows of a good GPS hand held device that will allow you to put in the info to mark the 4 corners of a claim. I would also like to be able to mark and save all the info of any places I want to return too. Stuff to mark could be, old mines, places where I found gold, truck location if needed.

I just don't seem to be able to get Google Maps to do any of the above.

    Me, too!

Last year I bought maps from BLM for the areas I thought I may be going to prospect. I used a highlighter to outline the boundary of the claims, and noted in the margins the GPS coordinates of the claim, name of the claim, page in the claim book where the claim was listed, etc. Not the best setup, but it worked.

I discovered yesterday that you can mark Google Earth with areas you want to visit, search using GPS coordinates, note where you've been, etc. I don't know which mobile devices can use Google Earth.

  • Garmin Oregon works well for my claims. Their base camp software for your computer is free and links to the gps. I would not get the topo maps with the gps. Rather buy the hunt data chip for your state which has topo and land ownership.
    • Dick, I use BackCountry Navigator at the moment but I'm interested in knowing if Garmin Oregon shows the Township/Range/Section blocks

      • No it does not show the plss.  I use google earth for that.

    • Thanks, I will check it out.
