4-17-15 finds and trip to police dept.

Yesterday I headed back to a cellar hole I hammered last year with my Ace350. Itching to put my new At Pro through the paces and see what i may have missed last year. I did get more targets but only scored one real keeper. Hunting cellar holes is a lot like parks and ball fields in the trash department. There's a lot of junk. But what I call "junk" from cellar holes is stuff that people used in every day life to survive. Park junk is can slaw and Budweiser caps. Here's the take from the cellar....

piece of door or trunk hinge
horse tack
another axe head
bell has me puzzled...looks like it's off an old alarm clock but this about 3 1/2" so maybe some kind of door bell...no idea
the thing in the horse shoe is a copper cap with wood still inside...possibly the end of walking stick or top of flag stick....again no idea just guessing
square nails up the wazoo....
and of course when you get a solid 53 signal at a cellar hole it's most likely what I call a Remington nickel AKA shotgun shell lol

But I did manage a keeper....

Cant complain with that at all. After an hour or so I headed out in search of a well, privy or trash pit. About 50 yards away I found a small well. I didn't spend much time there because about another 75 yards away I spotted a depression in the ground and had to go see. Found broken brick and enough square nails to sink a battleship. Another 2 cellars that's not any maps I've seen. I poked around for a bit playing with the iron audio and stuff but didn't find much there. Figured I'd call it a day and head out. There's a power line close by and headed for that to make the walk back easier. This is where the day took an odd turn and the cops come in the picture...
I got to the power line and about 100 yards up the trail I found a bunch of stuff that was not expected. There was a drivers license, pair of boots, t-shirt, HP tablet and weirdest of all...a silver bullet pendant/keychain with a paw print on it. The license tells me he's a 20 year old male. I exhausted every online method to track him down but had no luck. The stuff looked like it was there for a little while as the tablet has water in the screen and the boots were flat like under snow all winter. Here's what I found....

At first i wanted to blow it off and say it's stolen stuff dumped in the woods but my gut tells me different. I brought home the license and silver bullet with paw print thing (which I found out to be a keepsake urn for a pet....weird!) and this morning I went to the police dept. I told them the situation and she asked if I removed anything and I gave her the things I had. She looked at his ID and told me they were familiar with him but nothing recently. I get the impression he's a "troubled" teen. She took my contact info and directions to his stuff and said they would call me if they had questions or need help with directions. Not sure what to make of the situation but I hope this young man is ok and didnt do something stupid....

All in all it was a great day! GL and HH

  • Good thinking and all around decency. After watching enough true crime shows, it's amazing how such a thing as a few personal items can .take or break a search or a crime. Nice going, and pretty coin. :)
  • Oh Ron by all means. To be honest I just assumed thought it was just garbage. I was going to remove it as we all have done numerous times. It makes you think twice about investigating something out of place.

  • I would like to remind everyone who finds items and things out of the ordinary, too not touch or move them and contact the authorities immediately.  Try not to walk around the area and leave out the same way you came in.  It could be a potential crime scene.  When doing a crime scene re-construction, sometimes the way items are facing or laying can be crucial.  I know its tempting to pick the items up, just to look at them, but its better to not touch them.  I just thought I would put this out there. Thanks, Ron

  • Bob nice finds. I would have to agree with you in regards to needing to turn that stuff in. I hope the kid is ok.

I kinda wanted to share a weird encounter I had last year. I was doing some prospecting about a year ago and came across a extra large black plastic bag next to a bridge. The bag was full of something large, dense, and heavy. I thought to myself that whatever is in there cant be good. I put one of my prospecting gloves on and slowly opened the bag. I didn't get to open it very far until I realized the bag way full of some meat and blood. I thought to my self i just found a body. I saw some meat with bones and said "NOPE i cant open this" i closed it up and called the local Sheriff. They obviously responded quite quickly. Once I took them back down with a CSI to open the bad back up. Come to find out it was full of racks of pork ribs, steaks, and other misc meat. Looks as if someone had a bunch of bad meat and disposed of it at the bridges edge. The cops then asked if i could dispose of it because they didn't want to put it in there car. They ended up having someone come get it.

Needed less to say I didn't get much prospecting done because I wrap my head around why someone would put this  bag of meat next to river.

I know this was a little weird but I read your weird story that left you in the unknown wanting more information. It sparked memories of my experience.

    • That is a mad one for sure  Casey thank god it wasent a body that would turn you off going prospecting in the middle of nowere for a long time thanks for sharing and hope the guy on the licence turns out ok hopefully you might get some good news on it in near future Bob

  • Bob, nice finds ! That Bell cover might be out of a Bike , these covers are common for bikes hand bells .

And what type/value of that coin ? I see it is from the 1905 .

Good job on reporting to the authorities.

    • Thats an Indian head 1 cent....not rare or valuable. They were made until 1909 when they swapped over to the Lincoln cent. Dont know what it is but I find old US coins fascinating. Heres what the other side looks like..
